About the Event
Wales Rally GB is a stage rally motor sport event and, in 2019, was the 12th round of the World Rally Championship.
The event takes place over four days of competition and each day is divided into a number of ‘Special Stages’ which are when the drivers race against the clock for the fastest time.
For the rest of the event they have to follow a pre-set schedule on normal public roads to get them to the next check point on time.
Branded as Wales Rally GB since 2003 when the Welsh Government became the principal funding partner, the rally is based out of a central Rally Village with competitive stages throughout north and mid Wales.
Wales Rally GB is organised and promoted by Motorsport UK.
From David Bell…
I would be sure all the Motor Clubs in the UK get involved with the ‘Rally of Great Britain’ every year.
It is a recognised ‘duty’ of a Club to help and support the premier event in the World Rally Championship calendar where 4,000+ marshals turn out every year. Myself and the three motor clubs I am a member of have done and your Club is no exception. We have been represented (and appreciated) on the WRGB (now in its 76th year) every year since the Club’s inception in 2010 – the Company branded MINI standing out to its credit amongst the lesser mortals – and next year will be no exception. Two years ago, we appeared on national tv whilst on duty at Chirk Castle in Shropshire.
Personally… my first RAC Rally as it was known then, was in 1957 with the Lancashire Automobile Club – who were one of the founding Clubs of the event in 1932. I have marshalled and/or acted as an Official every year since – 63 years! Still operational and these days as a Safety Radio Operator Callsign ‘Gemini 61’ (http://geminicomms.000webhostapp.com/callsigns.htm)
Here is a unique opportunity for members of (any) Motorsport UK Registered Club – of which our UW MINI Owners Club is one, to become a MSUK Registered Marshal, and come along to Wales next year to marshal on one or more of the stages on the event. If it’s your first time, I would ensure you are stationed with experienced Marshal/s to ensure your safety and initial learning of stage rallying is eye-opening and enjoyable as possible.
